Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

A flush marker — also called a flat marker or a ground-level marker — must sit at or very close to the surface of the surrounding lawn. Most New Jersey cemeteries that require flush markers publish a written policy specifying the maximum permitted above-grade height (often one to three inches) and the acceptable marker dimensions. These rules exist so that grounds maintenance equipment can pass over the flat-grave sections without impediment. Flush Marker Guide reviews each cemetery's flush-marker policy before beginning any fabrication, ensuring that the marker we produce can actually be installed at the chosen ground without modification.

Foundation Requirements

Even a flush marker — which sits nearly at grade — requires a proper concrete foundation beneath it to remain stable through New Jersey's freeze-thaw winters. Most NJ cemeteries require foundations that reach below the frost line, typically at a depth of 36 inches or more in northern New Jersey counties. A flush marker installed without this foundation will shift, tilt, or heave upward over time, eventually requiring costly re-installation. Flush Marker Guide's installation team pours the concrete foundation to the cemetery's required specification and installs the flush marker level on that base, handling all foundation work as part of the standard installation service.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries — Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and other denominational grounds throughout NJ — may impose requirements on flush markers beyond the general marker policy. These can include restrictions on the types of imagery permitted, conventions about how names and dates are formatted, or limitations on the use of non-religious decorative elements. Our team contacts denominational cemetery offices directly to confirm these requirements before designing the flush marker, so the final design meets both the cemetery's rules and the family's intentions.

Flush Marker

A flush marker is a grave marker designed to sit at grade — at the level of the surrounding lawn — in compliance with the flush-marker rules that many New Jersey cemeteries enforce in their flat-grave sections. Unlike an upright headstone, which rises vertically from the ground, or a slightly raised flat marker with above-grade profile, a flush marker's top surface is essentially level with the surrounding turf. Flush Marker Guide produces flush markers in American-made granite and bronze. Granite flush markers are the most common: cut from Absolute Black, Silver Gray, or other domestic varieties, polished on the top face, and hand-carved with the inscription and any imagery the family chooses. Bronze flush markers — cast from American-made alloy and hand-finished in our Morris County workshop — are the traditional choice for veterans' sections and for families who prefer the warm tone of bronze. Bronze-on-granite flush markers combine a polished granite base with a cast bronze plaque face, providing both the visual weight of stone and the detail-capturing quality of bronze. Veteran and military flush markers are a specialty at Flush Marker Guide. As veteran and military marker specialists, we produce both standard flush markers for veterans' sections and private companion flush markers to accompany VA-provided government headstones, carrying personal and family inscriptions the official marker does not include.

Granite Options

Granite flush markers from Flush Marker Guide are cut from American-made stone to the exact dimensions the receiving cemetery specifies. Absolute Black is the most requested variety for flush markers because its dark background creates strong contrast with engraved or hand-carved white or silver lettering, making the inscription readable from above — important when a marker lies flat and visitors view it looking down. Silver Gray is softer in visual tone and works well with darker fill colors in the inscription. Edge profiles — polished, sawn, or thermal — are selected based on the cemetery's preferences or requirements. The top face receives a mirror polish in all configurations, providing a clean, consistent surface for the inscription and protecting the stone from moisture absorption.

Custom Design Process

Designing a flush marker begins with clarity about what the cemetery permits. Our Morris County showroom consultation — available in English, Russian, or Polish — covers the inscription text, any imagery, the granite or bronze choice, and the specific cemetery. We then verify the cemetery's flush-marker policy in detail before producing a scaled design proof. The family reviews and approves the proof. No fabrication begins until approval is confirmed. The finished flush marker is hand-carved in our workshop, inspected against the approved proof, delivered to the cemetery, and installed by our own team on the prepared concrete foundation. Families have a single point of contact throughout this process.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is the consultation. We meet with the family — at our Morris County showroom or by phone in English, Russian, or Polish — to understand the inscription, any imagery, and the cemetery. Step two is flush-marker policy verification. We contact the cemetery office to confirm the exact flush-marker requirements: maximum above-grade height, permitted dimensions, foundation specifications, and any material or imagery restrictions. Step three is the design proof. Our team produces a scaled layout at the confirmed permitted dimensions, which the family reviews and approves before fabrication begins. Step four is fabrication. The approved flush marker is cut from American-made granite or cast in American-made bronze in our Morris County workshop. Hand-carving is applied where the design calls for it; precision sandblasting handles field lettering. An artisan inspects every element before the marker moves to finishing. Step five is quality review. The completed flush marker is compared against the approved proof in every dimension and detail. Over 80 years of American-made hand-crafted markers establish the standard we apply here. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the flush marker to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation to the required depth, and installs the marker level with the surrounding grade — completing the flush installation to the cemetery's specification.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The cemetery required a strict flush installation — nothing above grade — and Flush Marker Guide knew exactly how to handle it. They confirmed the dimensions with the cemetery before we ever agreed to a design. That kind of care was important to us.” — Diane, Bergen County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a grave markers?

Flush markers typically follow the same timeline as other flat grave markers: eight to twelve weeks from design approval to installation. Simple inscriptions move toward the shorter end; hand-carved portrait imagery or ornate borders take longer. We provide a timeline estimate at the consultation stage and keep families informed throughout.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Flush Marker Guide installs flush markers at cemeteries throughout all 14 New Jersey counties. Our team handles all direct coordination with cemetery administration — including confirming the flush-marker specifications unique to each ground.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Flush markers from Flush Marker Guide are designed from the outset to meet each cemetery's specific requirements. We review the cemetery's written policy — including flush-marker height limits and dimension restrictions — before fabrication begins. Cemetery compliance is the first step in our process, not an afterthought.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Portrait photographs, religious symbols, military insignia, and custom decorative elements can all be included in a flush marker design. For markers where the cemetery restricts above-grade relief, we achieve imagery through precision sandblasting and engraving on the polished face. We produce a scaled proof for family review before any work begins.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. As veteran and military marker specialists, Flush Marker Guide produces flush markers for veterans' sections and private companion flush markers to accompany VA-provided government headstones. We coordinate with NJ veterans' cemeteries directly on placement and compliance.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
